Your roof is the one part of your home that is always in contact with the elements. Whether it be sun, rain, snow, or ice, your roof takes the beating. When checking your home, your roof is usually not even on the list, but it should be! Your roof protects the interior of your home; it protects you and your family. Checking your roof and ensuring it is in good shape for Winter should be at the top of your list. Below we will discuss a few things to look for when it comes to your roof.

Missing Shingles

Missing Shingles may not sound like that big of a deal, but it is. Shingles help to protect the interior of your home from water damages. If you have a missing shingle, it weakens your roof, causing it to be prone to leaks. If you have a missing shingle, have it repaired as soon as possible. It is a lot cheaper to have a shingle replaces than to deal with water damages.

Broken Gutters and Clogged Drains

Broken gutters can cause water to seep into your home. Unfortunately, you normally will not notice until it is too late. Mold and structural damages can be caused by broken gutters. Clogged drains can cause ice dams. If you have an ice dam you not only will have water damages, but it is likely you will have major damages to your roof because of the weight. Before the colder weather hits, ensure your gutters are in good condition and that your drainage systems are in working order.

Structural Damages

If you see structural damages to your roof, call a professional. It is crucial that you have them repaired before the colder weather hits. If not, ice and snow will make the structural damages worse. It is also likely you will incur water damages because of the structural problems.

Tree Limbs

Weakened tree limbs, ice, and snow do not mix. A weakened tree limb can break and cause devastating damages to your roof and interior of your home. Make sure all tree limbs over your home are strong if not, have them removed for your safety!
