Fall has arrived and with it comes the cooler weather! With cooler weather comes the chance of home disasters, such as water damages, fires, and even mold. Disaster Cleanup Services has tips to make sure your home is ready for the harsh winter that is to come.

Check Your Attic and Basement

Before winter arrives, it is important that you check your attic and basement. These areas are often neglected, as you don’t normally need to go to the attic or basement. However, these are the main places that could have leaks that could cause water damages. Check for any small leaks or openings in your attic or roof. A small leak can cause devastating water damages.

Check Fire Alarms and Extinguishers

Cooler weather means using heaters and having holiday lighting.  It is important to check the batteries in your fire alarms to ensure they are in prime working order. You should also make sure your fire extinguishers are up to date. Make sure everyone knows where the fire extinguishers are and that they know how to use them properly. It is also important to have a fire escape plan. These small steps can prevent fires from engulfing your home or office.

Check for Leaks or Mold Stains

  • Minor leaks around your home can lead to frozen pipes, water damages, and mold. Before a small leak gets out of hand, have it repaired. It is also important that any mold stains are checked by a professional. Mold stains usually mean you have a leak somewhere. This leak could cause major damages over the Fall and Winter seasons. It is important to be prepared.
  • Check for Drafts

Drafts can come from windows and doors. If you have a draft, it could lead to water damages and a chilly home. By winterizing your home, you are not only preventing damages, you are also saving money on your energy bill.
