Household Tips

Snowstorms are a normal occurrence during the Winter months, but is your home ready? Disaster Cleanup Services has seen plenty of disasters from winter storms. We have compiled a list of tips for areas to check for damages that occur regularly during and after snowstorms. We want you to be prepared and to avoid a disaster!

  • Leaky Roofs/Missing Shingles

The most common type of damage from snowstorms is missing shingles. Strong winds can easily rip apart shingles, leaving areas of your roof unprotected. These areas can cause leaks inside your attic and ceiling. If you have missing shingles, have them fixed immediately, as the area will begin to leak.

  • Frozen Pipes

Frozen pipes are a homeowner’s nightmare. One frozen pipe can cause devastating water damages to your home. It takes seconds for a burst pipe to flood your home with water. If you have a frozen pipe, call a professional to repair it before it bursts.

  • Sewage Backup

Sewage is dangerous to your health, but after a winter storm, it is a common occurrence. As the snow melts, it has nowhere to go, and it can cause your sewage to backup. If you have a sewage problem, never try to remove it yourself. This hazardous material contains bacteria and other viruses that can harm you and your family. It is best to call a disaster cleanup company, who has the proper equipment to remove and dispose of the sewage safely.

  • Flooded Homes

Flooded homes can be the most stressful of storm damages, as it can damage your entire home. If you have a flooded home, it is crucial that you remove your family from the area and call a professional to begin the water removal and water restoration process. The quicker you call, the better chances your items will be saved.

  • Home Damages from Limbs

Limbs can break from the weight of snow and ice. Many times, they break and fall onto the roof of your home. These damages are not just structural. Water damages also occur. If you have any damaged or low-lying limbs, have them removed before Winter!
